Since the beginning of the motion picture era, people all over the world have become infatuated with the latest hot rod or concept vehicle to hit the big screen. Whether it be classic silent films to recent action thrillers, these cars were often viewed as characters on their own and have as much importance to the plot as the actors themselves. From a banged up old station wagon, to a supped-up sports car, these cars fall into the category of most memorable automobiles to grace the silver screen. Buckle up!

DeLorean Time Machine

Starting things off with one of the most recognizable movie vehicles of all time, the Docs iconic DeLorean. Over the course of three movies, this iconic Back to the Future time machine was reliant on 1.21 jigowatts of power and a flux capacitor to travel from 1985 to 2015 to 1885 and back home again. Thanks to Marty and Doc Brown, everyone knows that all you need to travel through time is one souped-up DeLorean!

General Lee

This iconic 1969 Dodge Charger got its start on the popular television series The Dukes of Hazard. With a barrage of jumping, flying, barn-busting scenes, this car had a fleet of dedicated fans long before it hit the big screen alongside Jessica Simpson and her Daisy Duke's.

These Ford Explorers sure made a handy hide-out from those out-of-control dinosaurs. Fully equipped with panoramic glass roofs, self-driving capabilities, state-of-the-art information systems and a wonderfully bright coat of paint, it's no wonder Mr. T-Rex wanted a closer look!

Thelma & Louise's Thunderbird

In this iconic badass movie, Thelma and Louise set out in this 1966 Ford Thunderbird on what was supposed to be a two-day road trip. Little did they know that this trip would bring them face-to-face with death and destruction, eventually leading to the vehicle's demise off the edge of the Grand Canyon.

Ferris Bueller's Ferrari

On Ferris Bueller's epic day off school, taking a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder out for a joyride is just one of the many adventures he drags his friends on. But, when they realize the classic car has an extra 100 miles on it, they go to extremes to roll back the odometer. If there is one thing to be learned from this car, it's that driving it in reverse doesn't magically erase the miles.

Wagon Queen Family Truckster

Although it was a letdown from the fancy new car he ordered, the Wagon Queen Family Truckster helped Clark Griswold through possibly the worst family road trip ever in National Lampoon's Vacation. From being tagged by vandals to having poor Aunt Edna strapped to the top, it's safe to say that this car held it's own in the most unfavorable circumstances.

Ecto-1

This beat-up ambulance cost the Ghostbusters team a mere $4,800 and, according to Ray only needed the suspension, brakes, shocks, lining, pads, steering box, rear end, transmission, rings, muffler, and wiring repaired. How else would they have transported their proton packs around New York, though?

The Tumbler

Truth be told, any one of the Batmobiles could have fit this list perfectly. But, the Tumbler stands out from the rest with it's dramatically different, tank-like resemblance. This version, used in The Dark Knight, features machine guns, a rocket launcher, stealth mode and a detachable motorcycle!

The Wolfpack's Vintage Mercedes

In the movie, The Hangover, three friends, and an awkward tag-along set out in a classic 1969 Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet convertible, on route to notorious Sin City. Throughout the movie, the Wolfpack manages to misplace and crash the car, but the real damage is done when they find a live tiger in the backseat!

Herbie

This 1968 Love Bug played a role in skyrocketing the popularity of the Beetle car. Since then, the movie has been remade three times, with the latest version including a young Lindsay Lohan. One constant in every remake is the real star, a Beetle named Herbie, an autonomous, self-driving race car.

Greased Lightning

Greased Lightning is the only car on this list that has two different versions! Though both are 1948 Ford Dr Luxes, the one that appears most in the film is the white, unfinished version. The final red vehicle appears most prominently in the grand finale as the cast sings and dances around it. It is probably safe to assume that both models are automatic, systematic and hydromatic.

Iron Man's Audi

This next vehicle is a genius representation of product placement in film, Tony Stark's Audi R8 is enough to make us all run to our closest dealership and buy one. True to the characters clean-energy loving ways, it's no surprise the billionaire philanthropist goes for the all electric, e-tron version of this well-known sports car.

The Mystery Machine

Although it doesn't include fancy gadgets or upgrades, the Mystery Machine has other alluring aspects that give it the #1 spot on this list. Not only does it have a psychedelic paint job that hippie would love, but it also has more than enough room for any ghost-hunting gang and their talking dog!
