Many car owners take extra care during winter by storing their vehicles to prevent damage. Here are some key steps involved in maintaining a car during this time.

Location

About a year ago I first spotted this house, which then had two Nissan Bluebirds parked outside. I thought that was an impressive sight in 2013, but after exploring the same area recently, I was amazed to find the owner had acquired a third Bluebird! The. Photo Credit: Wikimedia Commons @Charlie

Avoid leaving your car outside in the elements. If no space is available at home, find a storage facility with no humidity and brick flooring to prevent rust and damage. Place a tarp underneath to protect against moisture if using a dirt floor.

Change Oil

Engine oil reduces friction and prevents overheating, but it accumulates contaminants over time. To avoid sludge buildup during winter, replace the old oil with fresh oil, saving time when the car is brought out of storage.

Before storing your car, clean it thoroughly by washing the body, windows, and polishing the chrome. Vacuum the interior, remove debris, and place baking soda boxes inside to absorb any musty odors during winter.

Change Fluids

After the car wash, drive to the gas station and fill up the tank to prevent air and contaminants from entering. Replace the antifreeze, add a fuel stabilizer to slow oxidation, and help absorb any moisture in the tank.

Tires

Replace tires with air leaks and inflate all tires to the recommended PSI to prevent air loss. Check and adjust tire pressure when taking the car out of storage.
